Do I need a guest book for my Accommodation?

Why every host should have a guest book—and how to make one that works for you

As an accommodation photographer who's walked into a lot of houses- I’ve seen firsthand how small details can leave a lasting impression. One of the most overlooked, yet incredibly powerful tools a host can use is a guest book.

Not only does it add a warm, personal touch to your space, but it also creates an opportunity for guests to share feedback that can help you grow—and attract new bookings.

Why a guest book matters

A guest book invites guests to slow down and reflect on their experience. It becomes a living story of your space, filled with genuine voices and real moments. These aren’t just feel-good mementos—they're valuable testimonials that can be shared (with permission) online to build trust with future guests.

In a world where authenticity matters more than ever, handwritten comments offer something star ratings can't: emotional connection.

How to create a guest book that guests will want to write in

1. Choose the right format
You can go traditional with a hardcover book, or modern with a digital tablet version linked to an online form. If you have great handwriting, a vintage guest ledger can add charm. Keep it consistent with your property’s style.

2. Make it visible
Place the book in a central, welcoming area—like the living room coffee table, entryway, or beside a welcome basket.

3. Add a prompt
Not everyone knows what to write. Add a simple note like:

  • “What was your favorite part of your stay?”

  • “Do you have a tip for future guests?”

  • “Tell us about a memorable moment from your trip.”

4. Add personality
Include a welcome message from you, a photo of the property, or a little “About us” section. This helps break the ice and encourages more thoughtful contributions.

5. Encourage sharing
Let guests know that their kind words may be shared on your website or social media (an opt-in checkbox or a short note will do). You can also offer to snap a quick Polaroid or photo for them to include beside their message.

Turning guest book comments into marketing gold!

With your guests’ permission, you can take their comments and:

  • Post them on your website or booking page

  • Share snippets on Instagram or Facebook with photos of your property

  • Turn glowing reviews into visuals using free design tools like Canva

  • Build a “What our guests say” section that adds credibility and charm

A guest book does more than collect memories—it builds your brand, builds trust, and helps turn happy guests into your best ambassadors.

And from a photographer’s perspective? A thoughtfully created guest book is just one more way to show that you care about the experience, not just the space. Maybe you can even pop some photos throughout the book too!

Wishing you 5 star reviews and lovely guests!
