Why remote & regional properties need a different photography approach

Remote and regional properties aren’t harder to photograph — they just need a different mindset.

Remote and regional properties aren’t harder to photograph — they just need a different mindset.

Distance, quiet, and space are often the main draw cards, yet they’re easy to under-represent if photography focuses only on interiors. Context matters more when guests are travelling further and staying longer.

For regional accommodation, photography should acknowledge:

  • scale and space
  • surrounding landscape
  • the feeling of arrival and departure

These details help guests understand what the experience will actually be like — and whether it suits them.

Some people want to holiday in the country, but be just up the road from the shops, and some want isolation with no phone reception, so capturing the hills or gravel drive way are VERY important.

Property Photography is all about portraying your accommodation in a way that is appealing to your ideal clients and make sure they understand the full picture of what they are paying for.

Communication

The communication process starts from the second they click on your website or listing images.

There was phase about 5 years ago where people were only doing close cropped images of their properties and yes it looks fabulous, but it doesn’t tell the whole story, and very quickly people were fed up with editorial looking images without the addition of practical ones.

In regional photography, it’s best to show the whole frontage, the driveways, the vegetable garden- give people a feeling of the space and lack of neighbours right at your window!

Now you may be thinking this is a bit overkill, but if you provide all the information in one spot, it increases the chance of a booking.

If your potential guest has to click away from your listing to do further research in the area, then we know they will get distracted and properly forget to circle bak, forget your listing name or book somewhere else.

From a practical point of view, this is also where careful planning matters. Travel, light, weather, and timing all affect the outcome, which is why regional shoots often benefit from flexible scheduling or extended stays.

When done well, photography doesn’t just show where a property is or how pretty it is — it explains why it’s worth the journey.

This property was photographed for Hosty Co. A high end property management company based in the Bellarine Peninsula
