If you host a property by the coast, you’ve likely experienced the seasonal dip in bookings when summer fades and cooler weather rolls in. Fewer tourists, chillier days, and closed beach kiosks can make it harder to keep your calendar full—but it’s far from impossible.
As someone who photographs accommodation year-round, I’ve seen that the most successful hosts adapt their approach for the season. Coastal getaways don’t have to be just for summer. In fact, the off-season can offer something even more special—peace, privacy, and a slower pace that many travelers are craving.
Lean into the season by promoting what makes your space a cosy retreat:
Warm throws, fire pits, or a wood-burning stove
A bath with a view, or comfy reading nooks
Hot chocolate, mulled wine, or a welcome hamper with seasonal treats
Professional photos of these features—especially styled with soft lighting or stormy seaside backdrops—can help guests imagine themselves there, even in the colder months.
In low season, your audience changes. Think about:
Remote workers looking for quiet work-from-home escapes
Couples planning romantic weekends
Writers, artists or photographers seeking creative retreats
Locals from nearby cities wanting a short break
Tailor your description to suit these needs—mention fast Wi-Fi, privacy, or guest slippers.
Partner with local businesses (like cafés, spas, or yoga studios) for added value of what's in the area- Such as crossposting on social media, or adding them to your guide book to show potential guests what there is to do during the cooler months.
Update your photos and listing description to reflect the season. Replace beach towels and sun hats with wool blankets, books, or board games in your imagery.
Many hosts forget to do this, and it can make your space stand out.
And don’t forget to ask guests for reviews—even a few kind words from someone who loved a winter stay can help reassure potential bookers that your property is great year-round.
While summer may bring the crowds, the off-season can bring the kind of guests who truly appreciate what your space has to offer.
With the right approach, you can turn a quiet season into a successful one.
Stay warm!
