Making Accessibility Easy: Small Changes, Big Impact
In 2024, I had the absolute pleasure of photographing more accessible accommodations than ever before – and honestly, it’s made me pretty proud.
Not just because more properties are opening their doors to people with all kinds of access needs, but because there's a growing awareness around invisible disabilities – and that’s something worth celebrating.
What do we mean by “invisible” disabilities?
They’re the ones you might not see at first glance – things like sensory sensitivities or neurological conditions. And the exciting part? They’re often the easiest and most affordable things to accommodate.
When we think of accessibility, we usually imagine ramps, knocking out walls and adding grab rails (which are super important!) – but there’s so much more to it.
Here are just a few simple, low-cost tweaks that can make a massive difference:
-
Scent sensitivities
Skip the reed diffusers and strong air fresheners
Be mindful of laundry detergents – go for fragrance-free options -
Light sensitivity
Use dimmable lights and bedside lamps
Add blockout curtains or blinds to control harsh sunlight -
Noise sensitivity
Install door seals to reduce outside noise
Rugs and soft furnishings help absorb sound
Acoustic curtains are a thing! -
Visual overstimulation
Stick with calm, monotone or minimal decor – less is more when trying to attract these types of guests. - Natural Fibres
Be mindful of fabrics that are being used- as some can trigger allergies.
These small adjustments might seem tiny, but for someone with sensory needs, allergies and other difficulties that aren't usually catered for- these can be the difference between stress and comfort.
There are SO MANY things to add to this list, but these are just a quick list of just a handful of things to get you thinking about ways to be more inclusive.
Of course, once you have it- photograph it! Highlight it, shout it from the rooftops so every one knows what your property is offering.
